The Origins of Cookies & Cream
Wikipedia says that “Cookies and cream (or cookies ‘n cream) is a variety of ice cream and chocolate sandwich cookies, with the most popular version containing hand or pre-crumbled cookies from Nabisco’s Oreo brand under a licensing agreement. Cookies and cream ice cream generally mixes crumbled chocolate sandwich cookies into vanilla ice cream.” This trend started in the late 1970s-early 1980s and many claim ownership.
While the term originated with ice cream, modern bakers eventually adapted the flavor into a baked cookie. By adding chopped chocolate sandwich cookies and white chocolate chips into a cookie dough base (often a chocolate or vanilla dough), the famous ice cream flavor was transformed into a baked cookie.
